Food Allergies

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Have you ever tried some food that made rashes on your body? Have you itchiness around your eyes, nose, throat and body skin? What is actually happened with your body is that it reacts on the food and that is known as food allergy.
Allergies on the foods are body’s condition where it overreacts, when you eat food which you have never eaten before. Your immune system becomes hypersensitive on certain food.

Your immune system in that case produce antibodies which are ready for “fitting” with these substances, recognized as harmful to your organism. Actually, these substances are not harmful to you, but your immune system mistakenly believes that they are.

When it is about food allergies, allergic symptoms are affecting of various parts of the body, but the most usually are in gastrointestinal track, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and at last skin. With the lasts researching, the number of American people who are suffering from food allergies is about 11 million. The symptoms may be ranged form mildly inconvenient to complete collapse of your body.

Treatments and Symptoms of Food Allergies

So far, we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about Allergies. You may decide that the following information is even more interesting.

There are various symptoms of the body that show you that you are allergic on certain food. Usually the symptoms are: swelling, itching of throat, nose, eyes, water eyes, runny nose, difficult breathing, hives, drop in blood pressure and in the worst cases death. Usually, the time necessary for reaction on the food, when it is about food allergies is from minutes to two hours, after entering food in your body.

There are various treatments which you may use for food allergies, but the best treatment is strict avoiding of foods on which you are allergic. Still, there are no medical treatments such as drugs for treating food allergies, but one that may be used is epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, which is medical solution for the most difficult cases of allergy reactions.

The most usually allergies reactions on food are for food such as: fish, shellfish, peanuts and nuts. Majority people are outgrow their food allergies, but there are and people who are allergic on certain food for whole life. In that case the best solution is to avoid these foods. So, before you have to eat something, it is recommendation to read all ingredients for that you need to eat. If you find that food contain ingredients on which you are allergic, you shouldn’t eat it.

Method For Avoiding Allergic Foods

If you are allergic on certain food, it doesn’t mean that you should stop with eating food on which you are not allergic. Also, if you think that you are allergic on some food, it doesn’t mean that you are, until you do blood analyzes and determine on which food you are allergic.

Also, it should to mention that avoiding of the food doesn’t mean totally avoidance of the foods. It is recommendation to make food diary for making list of the food on which you are allergic. So, you may eat all food, but after that you got some reaction, you need to write in your diary food that you have eaten. This food diary will help to the doctor to know what food you entered and had reaction.

There’s a lot to understand about Allergies. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

Vital Insights On Allergies

What are allergies

? How do they come around and why?

If you find yourself suffering from itchiness in your eyes, running nose, sneezing, or that your skin is terribly covered in hives, then you may be right in assuming that you are in for the allergy attack. There is no point in doubting that the attacks of allergy can give you all sorts of misery. Can you sleep through the night? Can you take in the food that you want? Sure enough, you want to be very careful.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of Allergies is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about Allergies.

There is always something and someone who can provide you with the relief that you so crave for. By going to the doctor, you are likely to be given the cure. Well, the medications are by and large going to address the symptoms but not really to dissolve the kind of allergic response that your immune system has.

Again, it is helpful to get to know the basics. The allergic reaction is brought about by the abnormal reaction of your immune system to those things or substances which are normally considered to be harmless. In fact, not all people can be affected by the same response. When you are labeled to be allergic to one thing, it means that your immune system considers the substance to be offensive.

Some of the known allergens are the pollens, animal dander, medicine, dust, fur, and food. The immune system takes on the role of the body’s protector so it releases the IgE antibodies which then lead to the cell release of the chemical like histamine and the likes to combat the foreign substance as it gets through the bloodstream.

The histamine, when released, acts on the individual’s lungs, throat, nose, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, and skin which then prompt the symptoms of the allergic response to come out. Any future exposure to the same kind of allergy can provoke the same response over and over again.

Again, you might wonder as to why some people are prone to allergies. There is an underlying fact that it can be due to the lineage. Meaning, it can be hereditary. If you have both or only one parent who has any allergic reaction then it may be passed on to you through your genetic makeup.

Common Things that Cause Allergies

As mentioned above, there are various types of allergens. Below are some of the very common ones which you might want to focus on.

Food. Allergy to food is frequent among infants and some of them are able to get away with it as they grow. However, some may be serious and may be carried on through adulthood. Some of the symptoms include diarrhea, stuffy nose, itchy rashes, abdominal discomfort, and a lot more. Several people drive allergic reactions to soy, milk, wheat, eggs, seafood, peanuts, tree nuts, and many other dairy products.

Insect stings and bites. The venom as found in the insect stings and bites often trigger an allergic reaction. The effect may either be mild or serious depending on how the person’s immune system may take it.

Airborne particles. They are known as the environmental allergens and are the most common types. Among them are mold spores, pollens from the trees, ragweed, or grass, dust mites, and animal dander.

Drugs. Antibiotics are the common medicines that trigger the allergy.

Chemicals. There are laundry detergents as well as cosmetics which cause allergy because of the components of these chemicals. The household cleaners, pesticides, and dyes may also promote the allergic response.

Take note that your parents’ allergies may not be exactly identical with the kind of allergic reaction that you may bear. The symptoms vary as well so you should be able to identify with the type that you suffer from.

Those who only know one or two facts about Allergies can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you’re learning here.

Why You Are Allergic And Others Are Not

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

Allergens are everywhere but why are there people who are more prone to developing allergies and why are there people whose bodies do not seem to give a heck?

The thing is, our bodies react differently to allergens. While it is true that allergy-inducing components are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink in varying quantities, our bodies can somehow fight them or get defeated by them. It is basically a war between the immune system and the nasty foreign substances we dearly call “allergens”.

The difference lies in the reaction of the immune system. Normally, allergens such as pollens, food and dust are very well tolerated by our bodies. The body treats them as common substances that do not pose any harm to the system. However, for some people with so-called allergic reactions, their bodies react defensively, oftentimes producing symptoms that are identified as allergic reactions.

This is where things mess up because by nature, the body should be tolerable enough to come in contact with the so-called allergens without putting up a fight. By the way, allergens are certain types of antigens which are basically foreign substances that upset the homeostasis

of the immune system.

For normal people with normal reactions to allergens, the immune system produces antibodies that are meant to combat with the foreign materials. These antibodies are, in a way, protectors of the body in protein form. They are medically known as immunoglobulins. They work by attaching themselves to the surface of the invading materials such that other immune system cells can easily destroy the allergens. There are five immunoglobulins that are found in human body namely IgA, IgD, IgG, IgM and IgE. The latter is the allergic reaction-producing immunoglobulin.

Think about what you’ve read so far. Does it reinforce what you already know about Allergies? Or was there something completely new? What about the remaining paragraphs?

However, the case is different for those people with allergic reactions for they develop the allergy antibody called IgE in abnormally high quantities. This either develops on the first exposure or it can sensitize for several years and will only arise on succeeding exposures.

For both conditions, it is possible that there is prior exposure to allergens that have triggered the development of the IgE antibody in higher quantities. Once this happens, the immune system would produce much higher numbers of IgE which would turn out to coat immune cells that contain certain chemicals that might cause various body reactions during their explosion.

When these chemicals are released, which include histamine, inflammation in specific sites of the body would occur, the typical symptom of allergy. This is the result of the body’s exaggerated reaction to various substances. On subsequent exposures to allergens, the body will react in the same exaggerated manner. In fact, the body may become more reactive. The result is an allergic individual who cannot put up with otherwise harmful substances.

But then again, for normal individuals, the reaction would be very different. Allergens will be treated differently by the immune system and would be readily eliminated from the body. Any subsequent exposures will not be entertained by the immune system as threats.

The importance of the IgE makes sense if seen from its original, and not the altered, function. IgE are meant to protect the human body from the invasion of parasites and not normal substances such as dust, dander and mites.

Thus, reactive responses to allergens are not normal and should be treated as such.

Partial Truths About Allergies

Monday, December 19th, 2011

From time to time, a persisting belief about allergies crop out and people somehow buy it. They buy it some more until it becomes an established partial truth. Here are some common beliefs about allergies that you should be on guard.

It’s not allergy, its hypersensitivity
Hypersensitivity or irritation may not be the same as allergy. But then again, it is a symptom. If hypersensitivity to a certain allergen occurs more than once it probably is an allergy, so get checked.

Children tend to outgrow their allergies
A small portion of children with allergies actually outgrow their bodies’ exaggerated reactions to allergens. However, this is not true for all children. Most of them do not grow out of their allergies, in fact for most cases, allergies do not only persist they worsen.

Milk allergy is an adult thing?and so is wheat allergy
Wrong. Both allergies are present among children but like what we have mentioned earlier, some of them outgrow these. What are left are the adults who are bothered by their intolerance with wheat and milk.

A person always has multiple food allergies
Not all the time. A person can have as much as 4 food sensitivities but not everyone have this. Oftentimes, it is a 1 to 1 ratio.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Allergies. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Allergies are psychosomatic
Psychosomatic diseases and disorders involve a host of sickness that is manufactured in the mind. Whether they were products of psychologically unhealthy thinking or not, when there are symptoms, something is certainly wrong about the body. Again, go see a professional, whether it’s a psychologist or immunologist. Either way, you will know what’s upsetting your health, and that’s a good thing.

Strawberries and tomatoes are the banes of food allergic people
Not really. There are of course a small number of people who cannot stand the effects of these reddish plumps on their bodies but not all allergic people are also allergic to strawberries and tomatoes. In fact, these two are not included in the 8 most common foods that people are allergic to. They are placed way behind the top 8.

If you are allergic to cow’s milk, try goat’s milk
Sure you can but you will have to do it at your own risk. The thing is, milk, regardless of the animal source, have the same basic protein components that make other people sick. If you do not trust us, try goat’s milk instead and see the effects. The good thing is, 40% of children who are allergic to cow’s milk can tolerate goat’s milk. So maybe you have a good reason to turn yourself into guinea pig.

Indoor house plants are the culprits of allergy rhinitis
It depends on the plant. If you have an entire house full of high-pollen plants, you should probably remove some of your daisies and whatnots. But the fact is, dull plants, and not the brightly colored ones, are more dangerous for pollen allergics.

Allergic response gets worse with repeated exposure
Not for everyone. They do tend to get worse at each exposure but there’s no telling whether allergic response consistently gets worse for every time you are exposed to allergens.

If you are allergic to iodine, skip the fish and seashells
You could probably try that but that would upset your so-called balanced nutrition. The good news is, you don?t really have good reasons to do this since people with iodine allergy are not necessarily reactive to fish and seashells.

Is there really any information about Allergies that is nonessential? We all see things from different angles, so something relatively insignificant to one may be crucial to another.

Food Allergies ? The Signs And Symptoms On Infants And Children

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Food allergies are the hypersensitivity reactions of the immune system to a naturally harmless substance present in the food. This denotes that prior to any allergic reaction; the individual has to be exposed to the allergen before. During the initial exposure, the allergen rouses the lymphocytes to generate the IgE antibody that works specifically with the type of allergen.

The produced IgE is discharged and then attached to the mast cells that exist in the various body tissues. For the next round that the allergic person takes in the same food, the allergens prompt the IgE antibody which are present on the surface of most of the mast cells and therefore trigger the release of the chemicals like the histamine. The symptoms that come around generally depend on the kind of tissue that releases the antibody.

Some Common Signs and Symptoms of Food Allergies

Food digestion is by and large a quite complicated process. Hence, it likewise produces a certain kind of effect on the location, the timing, and the symptoms that surface in relation to an allergic response to the ingested food. The signs and symptoms may occur between a few minutes to one hour after eating.

Typically, the food allergy is mostly felt as an itching in the mouth or as some kind of difficulty in breathing and swallowing. After which, some other symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and nausea can arise during the process of food digestion in the intestines and stomach.

Anyhow, it is obvious that the allergens get absorbed and then they pass through the bloodstream. As soon as they reach the skin, they start inducing eczema or hives. Now when they come across the airways, they take the form of asthma. They travel around and then get into the blood vessels which may trigger weakness, lightheadedness, and also anaphylaxis or the abrupt drop in the blood pressure.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Allergies. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

It may begin as a mild symptom like the tingling in the throat or mouth and the discomfort inside of the abdomen. However, it can be fatal whenever left untreated.

Food Allergy Problems with Infants and Children

Many of the known allergies to food actually start off between the first and second year of one’s life span. There are instances when they get resolved such as the allergies to eggs or cow’s milk. However, there are some which may be carried on until adulthood like the allergy to shellfish or nuts.

Infants and very young children tend to exude allergies to soy formula or milk.

This may not include the attack of asthma or hives as symptoms but they take the form of other signs which are closely related to infantile colic, poor growth, or some blood in the stool.

Infantile colic begins right within the first month of the infant’s birth and this involves a baby who cries and then sleeps poorly during the night. It is seen that the allergy to soy or milk diet is one intervening factor. The allergies among infants and young children are diagnosed during the food challenge or the changing of their diet.

Infants and children can feel the worst during food allergies especially that their immune systems are not yet that stable. They may feel the itchiness and they may sneeze or wheeze. Their temperaments and behavior are quite a challenge too.

It is therefore important to have them checked out by the pediatricians so that they will be administered with the right kind of treatment and their diet be changed.

Allergies And Allergens

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

When you’re learning about something new, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative article should help you focus on the central points.

Do you have an allergy? Do you suddenly feel like your head would explode or your skin is burning due to the unexplainable itchiness that you feel? Needless to say, allergies can truly make you uncomfortable. Anyhow, what do you know about them? How do they attack? What causes them? Who gets prone to them? Where do the allergens come from? There are thousands of questions that may be lingering in your mind. Then again, you need some time to discover more about this body reaction. You must fairly understand that not all people tend to exhibit the same kind of reaction. There are those who are not allergic to certain foreign substances while there are others with bodies that tend to take them differently. This article is about to bring you more knowledge about allergens and their effects.

The Allergens at a Closer Look

Generally, allergens are everywhere. They take the forms of dust mites, pollens, grasses, foods, pet dander, to name a few. The allergens are known to be the special kinds of antigens which prompt the allergic reactions of the body. The body is technically protected by the immune system. Now if it recognizes some foreign invaders, a part of the immune system gets turned on and then starts to generate the antibodies to combat the foreign substances. This results to the allergic reactions.

The diseases and their symptoms actually depend on the route and level of entry and exposure of the body’s susceptibility to the allergens. The allergens are comprised of various chemicals so the reaction is largely dependent on the part of the body that has been exposed. Simply put, the airborne pollens will produce a little effect when it gets in contact with the skin but it will be entirely different if the food allergens get ingested. In short, the allergens may be ingested as in the case of food allergens, inhaled as in the case of airborne pollens and animal dander, applied onto the skin, or injected into the body as in the case of an insect sting.

The Symptoms of Allergy

It is necessary that you come to know the symptoms of allergy so that you will be aware if you are already suffering from it. Basically, a person is said to have an allergy if his immune system reacts to a normally harmless substance.

There are two kinds of allergies that you must become familiar with. They are the perennial type as well as the seasonal type. The perennial type is the one that occurs for the whole year round whereas the seasonal type only breaks out at a certain time of the year. Of course there are measures to keep in mind.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

It involves the need to stay away or avoid the allergens and that of applying some kind of medication. The symptoms involved likewise depend from one person to another. They are influenced by the triggering allergen and the way the body takes it.

The common effects of the allergies are mild to severe itching, shortness of breath, rashes, anaphylactic shock, coughing, sneezing, itchy nose, eyes, and throat, watery eyes, conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, swelling of nasal passages, and several others.

Young and old alike can exude them depending again on how their immune system reacts to these foreign substances.

Predisposing Factors Of Allergy

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

If you have even a passing interest in the topic of Allergies, then you should take a look at the following information. This enlightening article presents some of the latest news on the subject of Allergies.

Allergens are common to all us which puts us in equal position against them. However, for some people something happens in their bodies that makes them more prone to allergens while other people tend to have characteristics prime to the development of allergic reactions. Below are the most common predisposing factors of allergy:

Pregnancy
Prior to the development of science, allergists already have the firm belief that allergies can be slipped into the bloodstream of the infant during pregnancy. It turns out, this old belief holds water- at least partially. Allergies can develop even while the baby is still in the womb. However, the onset of symptoms commonly occurs several years afterwards.

Parents
When your parents passed their genes to you, they passed along with them diseases, disorders and things that you wish you can get away from. Also, they tossed in the genes to make you prone to allergies- if either one or both of them were allergic, that is.

Genetics is the culprit for many things including allergy. According to studies, you are 60% more likely to develop your own type or the same type of allergies as your parents had if both of them were allergic.

Your chances get better if only one of them had allergies, then you become 30% likely to develop allergies. For most of us though who were graced with parents who had somehow developed immunity or rather did not develop allergies, we are only 15% likely to become allergic. This means that the genes dictate how sick one can be in the face of pollens, certain types of foods and animal dander.

The good news is, these risk percentages are only indications of possibilities. Not everyone with 60% possibility of inheriting allergies actually have them. Conversely, not everyone who had healthy parents will fail to develop allergies.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Allergies. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Allergy is not fully anchored on genetics and heredity though. There are other factors that determine whether you would clam up with allergens or not.

Birth
It was found out that premature babies are also more likely to have allergic reactions than those babies who had full term. Also, within the medical community it is believed that babies who were born in a high-pollen seasons have higher likelihood of developing hay fever. Bottle-fed babies also run the risk of developing allergies in comparison with breastfed babies.

Environment
Some people are lucky enough to carry the genetic predisposition to develop allergies as well as live in a conducive environment for allergen exposure. Not many people experience that. Children who grew up in places where there are higher pollen quantities, industrial pollution, dust, insects and other allergens are a lot more exposed to allergens than their counterparts.

With continuous exposure, it is possible for the immune system to exaggerate its reaction towards allergens, thereby producing allergic reactions.

One of the tell-tale examples that proves that environment act a major role in the development of allergies is the study conducted in Germany. A decade after the reunification of the East and West Germany, allergies incidence exploded. Nowadays, all of Germany is plagued with all sorts of allergies.

Over sanitation
The immune system generally weakens when not exposed to diseases, germs and harmful elements. Proponents of this belief as cause of allergy have found out that Westerners are far more prone to allergies than their counterparts in other parts of the globe.
