The Marine Biologist

Friday, January 15th, 2010

There are several features and roles that marine biologists have to assume, depending on their level of experience and expertise. You may be assigned to research different species depending on your location and assignment. You should also know the basic qualifications to make it as a marine biologist. You can be given tasks, based on your current degree.

On Research

If you intend to do research as a marine biologist, you need to finish college with a Bachelor of Science degree (4 years) at the very least, preferably from a known university offering specialization in marine sciences. Having this degree will allow you to work as a lab technician or on a ship running samples. You may also be assigned as a scientist. It is recommended that you have good grades in high school too.

A bachelor’s degree is not actually enough qualification to permit you to work as a scientist wherein you do your own research. You will need to get a master’s degree at the very least, but given the current employment conditions, you will also need a PhD in Marine Biology, lasting 4 to 5 years. As soon as you finish the PhD, you will be required to spend 3 to 4 years more in positions referred to as post-doctoral fellow. You can be hired as a temporary contract position by a scientist to run a part of the research semi-independently. As soon as you complete the stage, you will be considered qualified enough to be hired by a government agency, university or private research group.

Things to Do

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

As a marine biologist, you need to perform an active research program which includes publishing the results in peer-reviewed journals. You are also expected to review documents from other existing researchers in your field. If you are currently employed in a university, you will be tasked to teach, as well as supervise the training of research students at the PhD and Master’s level. You will need to be an active member of the community, such as joining committees in the academic department. You may also be tasked to apply for research grants. Funds are highly needed to do research.

About the Course and Other Requirements

Marine Biology is usually a major course in many universities. You can also choose to specialize further by going for areas like benthic biology or living on the ocean bottom, ichthyology or fish studies, etc. It is important to have a very keen mind, as well as the ability to be meticulous and careful. A lot of research will need you to repeat the same work again and again. Majority of scientific research does not lead to awards. You have to be patient with the developments. You will need to have a lot of positive reinforcement to stick to the course for the long term.

Tips to Get In

Always aim for good grades to stay competitive and possibly get scholarships. Focus on your writing skills and train more in your maths and computer programs.

You should always volunteer as an assistant if the opportunity comes up, since what you learned in university may not entirely be the same as the actual job you will be performing once you get out of school. You will adjust to the situation more as you get more experience.

So now you know a little bit about Marine Biology. Even if you don’t know everything, you’ve done something worthwhile: you’ve expanded your knowledge.

How Paper Shredding Can Keep You From Breaking The Law

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with Paper Shredders.

Identity theft has become a concern of everyone as more people become victims of this vicious crime. Shredding documents containing personal information is now mandatory by law. Failure to shred properly could lead to hefty fines and penalties.

In 2005 the disposal rule which is a part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) came into effect which discusses responsible disposal of documents containing private information. Let’s take a look at some of the issues surrounding paper shredding laws and how they could impact you.

The FACTA ruling basically says that if you maintain or possess personal information of anyone, it is mandatory that you take reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized use of the discarded information. So irresponsibly throwing documents containing personal information of anyone in the trash giving easy access to information thieves could make you a law breaker.

As an example you may hire a professional baby sitter and would have personal information about her, such as name, phone number, and social security number. You would be held responsible as to how you use that information as well as, disposing of any related documentation.

By failing to observe this law resulting in an employee’s stolen identity as a result of your negligence, he could recover damages of up to $1,000. Multiply that per employee if there are more than one. When a group of employes are involved they could form a class action suit against you. The fines can be pricey for both state and federal offenses as federal fines could be up to $2,500 per incident.

By taking reasonable steps to shred documents properly it would be easy to comply with the new law. After all that is the object of the whole anti identity theft movement is for each one to take the proper steps to prevent identity theft.

If you find yourself confused by what you’ve read to this point, don’t despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

Other means of destroying documents may work well, but may not be practical. You could burn or pulverize the documents but shredding has emerged as the most practical way to comply with this security issue.

When considering a shredder you would need to consider the most effective and affordable way this could be accomplished. Paper shredders for home or small offices come with different features.

Since security is the issue when considering a paper shredder you may want to get the machine that provides the best protection for the price. Shredding technology is constantly improving and one such improvement has been with the cutting styles, The strip cutting techniques are not as secure as the cross cutting or confetti shredders. Shrewd thieves have been known to reconstruct documents from shreds so that would certainly be a security threat.

If you are budget minded you may find a capable shredder at Wal Mart that would satisfy your needs. One of the most popular shredder brands Fellowes is sold there. Fellowes Powershred series consists of 10 models that offer the confetti or cross cut shredder style of cuts. These machines are highly recommended by reviewers. There are many other comparable brands to consider at reasonable prices.

Complying with these new shredding laws will help the home user and small business owner avoid fines and legal complications. Your employees and friends will have their personal information protected. Today having good shredding habits just makes good sense.

There’s a lot to understand about Paper Shredders. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

Factors that need to be considered when choosing a policy are personal health, weather, transportation, and the season in the place of destination. The cost of the policy depends on the insurance provider and type of travel insurance plan or policy. If you’re traveling with your family, you should get a policy that covers the entire family. So you see, choosing the right type of travel insurance to meet your needs is a difficult task. You need enough time and money in order to purchase the one that will work for you.

You can contact the insurance providers by way of phone or you can visit their site on the net. Some people prefer to visit the physical offices of the local insurance providers because they feel that they are given a more personal service. Choose among these three options. It’s all up to you now; remember, choose the travel insurance that will suit your needs in New Zealand.

This article’s coverage of the information is as complete as it can be today. But you should always leave open the possibility that future research could uncover new facts.

What Do You Know About the Fellowes Paper Shredder Line?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Current info about Paper Shredders is not always the easiest thing to locate. Fortunately, this report includes the latest Paper Shredders info available.

Fellowes is a company that began in 1917 by Harry Fellowes. He didn’t even start out selling shredders. Bankers boxes were his first offered products. Beginning in Illinois, this well-known company now operates globally. They reach out as far as Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, to name a few.

This company gives back in more ways than just providing reliable paper shredders. They also support the efforts of the City of Hope, which is a research, treatment, and education institution for life-threatening illnesses. The company honors its employees with team awards. They also make the effort to accommodate the public with as much information as necessary when choosing their products. They offer shredder supplies, a shredder selector guide, information on Identity Theft, warranties, and other office products. They make their site user-friendly and even give a list of the stores where you are to find a Fellowes paper shredder. Places like Office Depot, Staples, Office Max, Amazon, CompUSA, Costco, Fryes, Kmart, Radio Shack, Wal Mart, Sam’s Club, Sears, Shoplet, Target, Tiger Direct, and Micro Center. Their dealers include Corporate Express, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Quill, CDW, My Office Products, and WB Mason.

It should be easy to find a Fellowes paper shredder with handy features such as stopping the paper should it be touched after entry. How many of us have almost thrown away or shredded something important, trying to jerk it back at the last minute upon realizing our mistake, only to find that it’s too late? This feature also saves your hand should it get too close to the opening. Safety features are especially important on equipment that can cause accidents.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on Paper Shredders now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

One of their lowest capacity personal light shredders is the Powershred P-45C, which sells for $80 and has a 6 sheet capacity, but only runs 7 minutes max. (Keep in mind that light duty may have different meanings for different people. How long do you expect your shredder to be able to run? This is a consideration you’ll want to check when you buy a shredder.) This personal Fellowes paper shredder has confetti cut results and a 9 inch paper entry width. Even this Fellowes shredder offers safety features and paper jam prevention.

Moving on up with shredding capabilities…..one Fellowes paper shredder can handle material up to 16 inches wide, which is very helpful in businesses that use all online sorts of paper sizes on a regular basis. The shredder with the 16 inch wide paper entry can shred up to 38 sheets at one time continuously! Now that’s impressive! If you have a large office and more than 10 office employees to accommodate on any given workday, you’ll like the jam release option and heavy duty performance. The 37.5 gallon wastebasket allows for less emptying, which means less frustration for your office workers. There’s also a holder in the door for the supplies that go with the shredder. At $2800, you should get your money’s worth with the power this machine offers. It has a speed of 20 feet per minute.

Whatever your shredding needs, don’t overlook the lubricant. It is essential to keep your shredder properly oiled for maximum performance.

If you let your car run out of oil, it burns up the motor. If you let your shredder run out of oil, there will be significant damage as well. A 12 ounce bottle of Fellowes lubricant costs $17. Small household shredders that are run only occasionally need oiling at least twice a month. Your office shredder would require more attention.

Add Life to your Quilting with Embroidery

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Do you ever feel like you know just enough about Quilting to be dangerous? Let’s see if we can fill in some of the gaps with the latest info from Quilting experts.

Embroidery is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, much the same as quilting and knitting and other hand crafts. Many crafters who enjoy quilting also end up enjoying embroidery and might feel as if they have torn loyalties-which craft to pursue in the small amount of time available for hobbies? The good news is that quilting and embroidery make excellent companions. Crafters who love quilting but are attracted to the depth and color that embroidery stitches offer can follow both their loves by combining the two crafts.

A quilt embellished with embroidered stitches is one of the most beautiful hand-crafted creations imaginable. Take a look at some of the “crazy quilts” from the Victorian era. These quilts are most often made of silk, often from leftover men’s ties or other bits of fabric, and were pieced together in a random manner (hence the name) and then heavily embellished with embroidery. Even if your interest in quilting slants more toward traditional quilts, it’s worth taking a look at these crazy quilts to get ideas for using embroidery to embellish your quilts. Crazy quilts use embroidery extensively, in many cases covering nearly every bit of the quilt’s surface, but you can use touches of embroidery here and there on your quilts or quilted clothing to give it depth and texture.

Embroidery stitches are easy to learn, and you may even know some already.

Browse through sites on the internet, and you’ll find many with clear photos or pictures of embroidery stitches. Some common embroidery stitches you might want to use include blanket and chain stitch for outlining, and feather, herringbone, lazy daisy, straight and cross stitches for decorative touches.

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole Quilting story from informed sources.

Many quilters enjoy doing appliqué as part of their quilting techniques, and embroidery is a natural partner to appliqué. The process of appliqué involves layering one fabric atop another, as opposed to sewing pieces of fabric together, and embroidery stitches such as the blanket stitch can be used to decorate the edges of the appliquéd piece. Or perhaps you may want to use embroidery on the background fabric, to emphasize the appliquéd pieces. The manufacturers of embroidery floss have kept pace with developments in the world of crafting, and now offer floss in an array of fibers, including perle cotton, rayon, silk and even linen and hemp. They also feature brilliant colors, with some even offering hand-dyed and variegated flosses.

Many quilters prefer to do their quilting by machine, instead of hand, and these same quilters may also prefer to do their embroidery by machine. With the huge variety of incredibly powerful sewing machines on the market, this is a snap. Many sewing machines have embroidery functions with extensive lists of stitches, which are as easy to accomplish as flipping a switch on the machine. As with embroidery floss, there are many specialty threads available for machine embroidery.

Look into adding embroidery to your quilting and open up a whole new world of quilting and crafting pleasure to your life.

Styles In Quilting

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Quilting, like fashion, evolves with the times. Like any work of art, too, it also has its own traditional classics, innovations, and varied influences.

The inspiration for these styles is as different as the people who made them, their history, and their dependence on the materials and fabrics on hand. The following are some of the major quilting styles that had become staples.

Knowing them is a good step for a beginner. It can eventually help develop your very own style in the end.

Baby quilts

This is one of the all-time favorites. Baby quilts become treasured mementos when their users (who were once babies) become older.

Experienced quilters tell us that babies tend to like the feel of satin and the flannel-like materials. Since this would sound like the finished quilt is going to be used (and washed) a lot, make sure that you use durable materials and threads.

Rag quilts

Today’s latest in the quilting circles are rag quilts. These are quick to make and fun-looking. They are distinctly refreshing in their conscious break from traditional designs.

They tend to combine lots of medium-sized blocks sewn together, patchwork style. It mixes unusual materials often overlooked in quilting (denims, flannel, polar fleece, etc).

Patchwork quilts

This old standard beauty is made by sewing together little patches of fabrics, and in different sizes and shapes. Generally, they are to make a pattern or blocks of pattern.

The quilt blocks are then sewn to become the quilt top. The quilt is then made after this process.

Christmas quilts

If you don’t have accurate details regarding Quilting, then you might make a bad choice on the subject. Don’t let that happen: keep reading.

Another standard favorite are the Christmas quilts. Traditionally, it is always a good idea to use plain white backgrounds and utilizing blazing red and cool green fabrics.

Gold and silver are acceptable as accents. Christmas motifs (bells, holly, flowers, etc) are not encouraged, though.

Amish quilts

One of the most beautiful and inspiring quilts are those made by the Amish people. Their original patterns (tree of life, star of Bethlehem, double wedding ring, etc) have been replicated and used all over the world.

The quilts are famous for their simple yet striking designs, as well as for their intricate quilting styles. Thick batting are traditional and their finished quilts are very tidy.

Memory quilts

Like its name, memory quilts are made for remembrances and celebrations of lives of loved ones, loved events, or some memorable occasions mostly connected with the family.

Birthdays, weddings, births, deaths, anniversaries ? all the reasons to commemorate an event is memorialized in a quilt to extend that particular memory.

Cathedral window quilts

These are the quilts inspired by the beautiful shapes and patterns of stained glass windows in churches all over the world.

Most copied are the window panes.

The quilts are made from muslin or cheesecloth. The choice of cloth is to simulate the translucent effect of light generated by a real church window. The window frames are made from heavier cottons or calicos.

Other quilt styles

More and more styles are coming up every so often. The last of the popular ones include the Civil War, Hawaiian, Photo Memory and the Scrap quilts.

Today, there are more quilting styles than can be listed as there are hybrids being produced almost every day.

Ferrets

Friday, January 8th, 2010

More people are considering ferrets as household pets. These creatures that are typically colored black, brown, white or mixed fur may grow up to 20 inches in length, 5 inches in height and weigh about 2 to 4 pounds. They have an average life span of 7 to 10 years that may live just as long as other animals kept inside a home.

The ferret belongs to the Mustelidae family and one of its closest relatives is the weasel. Studies have shown that it has similar qualities to badgers, skunks and wolverines so if you are planning to own one, keep in mind that this small creature is a carnivore.

This means that your ferret should eat either meat or poultry. When you are shopping for it at the grocery, make sure that it contains high level protein and low levels of fat.

You must never get food that is rich in carbs or sugar as well as those that are intended for other animals as this may cause serious health problems for the animal.

One thing you should know before deciding to own a ferret is that unlike other animals, they require a lot of attention. They don’t like being locked up in a cage the whole day like your hamster or guinea pig so if you don’t have the time, you should think about getting something else.

If you have children at home who are below the age of 6, this should not be given to them because ferrets have sharp teeth and they will retaliate if they are attacked.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I’m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

Most ferrets sleep for about 18 to 20 hours each day but when they are awake, they must be allowed to come out and play. The downside to this as some owners have experienced is that they will chew on just about anything that could do some considerable damage to the home. The only way to prevent that from happening is to ferret proof your home.

You can do this by putting metal coiling on all your electrical cords, blocking off certain areas of the house so your ferret will not go there, windows must be screened so the animal does not get out of the house, the floor must be cleaned at all time to prevent them from eating dirt that is on the floor and air ducts are covered using ferret proof vents.

The ideal cage for a ferret must measure 18? x 18? x 30?. This will give them space to move inside as well as play with toys that you provide them. There must also be a litter plan to collect their waste that can be removed, cleaned and returned once a week.

You will need to toilet train your ferret so when it needs to answer nature’s call, it can easily do so inside the litter box. The best one to get is the kind of made of recycled newspaper that will also need to be cleaned between one to two times daily.

Ferrets are now considered to be the third most popular pet in the United States. If you think you have the time to spend with such a cute little animal, go ahead and get one. You may not bring it around the neighborhood like a dog but you can spend quality time in the comforts of your home.

As your knowledge about Ferrets continues to grow, you will begin to see how Ferrets fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.
